چکیده

We present numerical evidence that suggests the introduction of a non-zero pion mass might dramatically affect the structure of minimal energy Skyrmions. It appears that the shell-like Skyrmions which are the minima when the pions are massless can fail to be minimal energy bound states for particular baryon numbers, with a strong dependence upon the value of the pion mass. The effects of a pion mass may include the replacement of shell-like configurations with crystal chunks and the loss of shelllike bound states with baryon numbers five and eight; which is in agreement with expectations based on real nuclei.

We show that Skyrmions with massless pions in hyperbolic space provide a good approximation to Skyrmions with massive pions in Euclidean space, for a particular relationship between the pion mass and the curvature of hyperbolic space. Using this result we describe how a Skyrmion with massive pions in Euclidean space can be approximated by the holonomy along circles of a Yang-Mills instanton. Th...

Skyrmions and the Skyrme Parameters

The traditional approach to fixing the parameters of the Skyrme model requires the energy of a spinning Skyrmion to reproduce the nucleon and delta masses. The standard Skyrme parameters, which are used almost exclusively, fix the pion mass to its experimental value and fit the two remaining Skyrme parameters by approximating the spinning Skyrmion as a rigid body. In this paper we remove the ri...

Finkelstein-Rubinstein constraints for the Skyrme model with pion masses

The Skyrme model is a classical field theory modelling the strong interaction between atomic nuclei. It has to be quantized in order to compare it to nuclear physics. When the Skyrme model is semi-classically quantized it is important to take the Finkelstein-Rubinstein constraints into account. Recently, a simple formula has been derived to calculate the these constraints for Skyrmions which ar...

Normal Mode Spectrum of the Deuteron in the Skyrme Model

The normal mode spectrum of the deuteron in the Skyrme model is computed. We find a bound doublet mode below the pion mass, which can be related to the wellknown 90◦ scattering of two skyrmions. We also find a singlet ‘breather’ mode and another doublet above the pion mass. The qualitative pattern of the spectrum is similar to that recently found for the B = 4 multiskyrmion. The symmetries of a...

Negative Baryon density and the Folding structure of the B=3 Skyrmion

The Skyrme model is a non-linear field theory whose solitonic solutions, once quantised, describe atomic nuclei. The classical static soliton solutions, so-called Skyrmions, have interesting symmetries and can only be calculated numerically. Mathematically, these Skyrmions can be viewed as maps between two three-manifolds and, as such, their stable singularities can only be folds, cusps and swa...
